Youth Initiative

EqualityMaine’s Youth Initiative’s goal is to create a more inclusive, supportive, and affirming climate in Maine for LGBT, questioning and gender non-conforming youth. Unfortunately LGBT youth in Maine are not safe in school. The 2011 GLSEN School Climate in Maine Snapshot found that 8 in 10 Maine LGBT students experienced verbal harassment in school and 3 in 10 were physically harassed based on their sexual orientation.

We will create change in Maine’s public schools by working with administrators, teachers, and students through these three approaches: We will provide research and information to school administrators statewide; execute dozens of professional development sessions on how to prevent and address LGBT bullying for teachers and school staff and implement a youth leadership development program to empower LGBT youth to make change in their schools, including a Youth Lobby Day.

We are proud to partner with youth organizations all across Maine on this initiative, and more directly with GLSEN Southern Maine starting in the Fall of 2015.  With our partnership with GLSEN Southern Maine, EqualityMaine is supporting GSTAs in Southern Maine by coordinating monthly regional meetings and supporting their leadership team.

STUDENTS FOR SAFE SCHOOLS LEADERSHIP TEAM

GLSEN Southern Maine’s Students for Safe Schools Leadership Team is focused on developing leadership and creating safe schools for all students. Applicants must be enrolled in a K-12 school and willing to commit time and energy to the team. The leadership team meets once a month on Saturdays from 11-2 pm in South Portland from December to May. It is also expected that leaders participate in regional GSTA meetings and help with events like Days of Action and Pride. To apply, please complete the online form.  If you have any questions, contact GSTA Coordinator, Gia Drew, at gdrew@equalitymaine.org
